Excerpt from The Character of Jesus

The following discourses were delivered in the Broadway Tabernacle on the Sunday evenings between January first and Easter of the winters of 1907 and 1908, twelve of them in the former year and fourteen of them in the latter. They are simple studies in the character of Jesus, the twofold purpose of the preacher being to incite professing Christians to a deeper devotion to their Master, and to awa ken ih non-christians a desire to know more of the founder of the Christian church, and to persuade them to become his followers. The congregations were composed largely of young men, not a few of them being students. It is in response to numerous requests of these young men that the sermons are now published. No preacher speaks entirely as he writes, or writes altogether as he speaks. The sermons have been allowed to retain for the most part the unstudied form of extemporaneous discourse, not even the repetitions being eliminated, which are inevitable in a course of sermons addressed to a congregation changing from week to week. Ques tions of authorship and text were all left untouched, as having but slight interest for a majority of those who heard the sermons. After a study of a con.

Next to scripture, this book has brought me closer to Christ and helped me to understand Him as a Man more than anything else I've ever read in my life.

Interestingly, it's also hands down the absolute best leadership book I've ever read in my life.

Jefferson has a gift for bringing the Man to life in such a way that you yearn to incorporate his qualities and characteristics into your own life.

As Jefferson writes, "Jesus is a name, but as a person he is shadowy and unreal. His face has become obscure. Our heart does not feel his power. We are not indifferent to him, but we have no keen sense of loyalty to him, no purifying consciousness of adoration. We need to study him afresh. It may be that as we study him he will step out of the picture and take his place by his side. Not until we know him as a comrade do we get from him what he has to give. Because his face is dim we are often depressed and defeated. We are always faint in life's hard places unless we are close enough to catch the light of his eye and feel the strong beating of his unconquerable heart."

After reading this book, I've never been more motivated by be like Christ in every aspect of my life.

And I can't think of a better book to read for developing leadership skills.

Love it.
The author not only masterfully portrays Jesus through the eyes of scripture, he has seen Him as His personal Lord and master. Jesus is the outcome and fruit of all ministry activity in the church. The highest perfection of spirituality is the character of Christ. His live is the best and only way to live life. This book will help you to know what you are looking at, as He is the author and finisher of your faith! May we all change to be like Him, as we look to Him through the eyes of faith. The faith will certainly come as you read this book on Jesus Christ the Savior of the World.
the Author makes the issues he discusses so real that it is easy to follow. he does not gloss over any angle of the character of Jesus Christ or try to embellish it to make it acceptable. as I read the book I couldn't help but wonder why I had not considered those angles to the character of Jesus before.
I recommend this book to all Christians who want to be living examples of Christ to the world.
Wonderful insights and very moving. I have loved reading and pondering it. Jefferson's insights into the Master are moving and wise. While the book is actually a transcription of sermons he gave, so the content can be flowery at times as he's setting up his case, it is easy to read and a real gem. I keep it right next to my scriptures and learn from it every day before climbing into the Word itself.
This is not a clean transcribe from archive.org. You can download a cleaner version for free from the Internet archive website. I feel like I've been ripped off. Not thank you You can do better than selling another's work who offered it for free.
I read most of this book and found that the author tended to spend a considerable amount of time and energy about the subject of the chapter; it could have been written in a different style requiring less print and effort to ferret out the message of each chapter.
This book was one of the first books I ordered from a book club many years ago; (about 1967 as I recall), and has recently been quoted from by L. Tom Perry in Oct. 2014 General Conference. I have lost track of my hard-bound copy, so decided I had better get the edition. Have read it again almost all the way through, and it is better than it was the first time I read it. Charles Edward Jefferson was an inspired speaker, and has many enlighting ideas that are in harmony with my own beliefs. It has a few typos that are easy to reconcile. The price is rock bottom, so I can overlook a few minor defects. Thanks for publishing an old favorite that I can share with friends!
